Story And
How The Opening Sets It Up And Genre
One main point
in our storyline is how there has been a nuclear explosion and the radiation has
caused the world to nearly end. Only a few characters with previous military
background are left and they have to fight to survive. We help to set this up
in the opening by using props such as gas masks to show the radiation side and
camouflage jackets to show the military background. We also used abandoned
shots to show that not many people are left in the world but didn’t include too
many of these to not bore the audience. In the opening we are able to see the
characters, a little bit about them and some of the settings and locations. We
did this to be able to help get the audience engaged but also not find out too
much about the film in the opening. The opening overall helps to set the story
up because we show elements about our storyline and our audience is able to add
it up. This is a very common things in thrillers and the stereotypically
thriller movie viewer likes this challenge and rollercoaster of emotions that
follow. We showed that our movie was a thriller in our opening by the black and
white effect used. This was because it causes it to be more gloomy and serious
than in the bright daylight. This helps to show the type of movie it is because
by seeing this effect the viewers are expected this. We also showed our genre
in the opening by characters jumping out on other characters. This shows it to
be a horror thriller movie because by this happen gives the audience a
different emotion then they may have previously had. This gives them a
rollercoaster of emotions which is very common in thriller movies, especially
horror where there may be jumpy scenes. Another way we showed genre through our
opening was by not giving too much away. In films such as chick flicks, they
give away the storyline in the opening and show how it happened/developed. In
thriller movies this doesn’t happen. There are stereotypically mystery’s
involved which gets the audience thinking and the storyline comes together in
the end. This has happened in our film by only giving the audience implications
of the storyline then allowing it to be later revealed in our movie. This fits
rather than juxtaposes stereotypical thriller movie openings.

Storyboard
Once arriving to the Bunker on our filming day, we chose to change some of the locations we was going to film within the Bunker. We kept most of the locations the same, but changed some of the acting we was going to do in them. I have created a new storyboard which now fits in with what happens in our Thriller opening.

Title Order Changes
By looking at the Godzilla opening titles (Below) and our opening titles (Also below) we decided to change and re-order some of our titles. One example of this was to change Music By to Music Supervisor. This makes it seem more proffesional as in title sequences that we looked at, that was how it was presented. We added in Warner bros pictures and RJJP production presents also. We added this as in every title sequence this follows shortly after the film production's name and this is where we will place it. Our slight changes will make our title sequence more effective because the terms we have used our what would be used in proffesional film openings.

Editing Changes
When adding our title sequence onto our thriller video, we were recommended some changes by our teacher Mr Sheriff. These were to look at an actual thriller opening and compare the title sequence to ours. The thriller opening that I looked at was Godzilla.
Below is our first attempt at a title sequence.
(Please ignore the bad quality which will be improved on our final cut)
We used the same software that we edited on called Pinnacle. From this, We decided that we wanted to change some things about it. One thing that we are improving is the lack of sound stings in tense moments. For example, when she looks in the mirror, when they sit up, ect. In our thriller, we have some natural sound effects such as the door shutting, footsteps which we included because they were effective and fitted well. Although we have some sound effects, we believed that more were needed to make Subterranean look and sound as effective as possible. Something else that we decided to change was the font used. This is because by looking at our peers video, Extinct, we released that the neat font they used in theirs looked far more effective and professional than ours. Although our font used fits with the themes, we believe that it looks amateur and to make it look as realistic as possible.
Another change that we are going to make is having our film name, Subterranean, appear on a black screen rather than over the footage. This is because it will draw the viewer's eyes to it more and make it stand out more than the other titles. This is important because it is our films name so needs to be able to be seen by the viewer. From looking at the Godzilla title sequence, I wrote down what titles came up and then done the same with our second rough cut and compared them. Above is the comparison and what we are going to change our titles to.

Film Trailer
Below is our film trailer for our Thriller 'Subterranean'. For our trailer we used clips that werent choosen for our final piece aswell as a couple that our in our final piece. This is to keep the mystery and not give too much away.

Film Poster
We have decided to use this as our final film poster before the film has come out. This is because it doesn't give too much of the film away although it shows the viewers what the films about. The image shows that it involves gas masks so implies that there has been a nuclear war, attack, ect. It could also imply the use of a bunker and if not, when the viewer watches the final thriller it would make sense. The font was used to imply the army element of our film such as their backgrounds. This poster is effective because it is quite plain so draws the viewers attention to it. The tagline 'When you though you were alone' is effective because the viewer is wondering as to why this could be and how comes there is more than one person. The one child shown in the trailer relates to this as having more than one person on the poster would confuse the viewer as it doesnt fit with the tagline. The colours used fits the codes and conventions of a thriller because the greys and blacks used are dark and mysterious and shows the nature of the film.

Re-Shoots
Due to filming enough clips on the first filming we do not need to film any more at the bunker. However, as a group we decided to film random shots such as blowing out and candle and abandoned places to add into the opening to create more suspense. This will be effective because as our thriller is set after a nuclear war so the abandoned places will represent this and the candle will represent the end of life as they know it.

Thriller Music
After putting all of our Shots together for our thriller, as a group we decide which soundtrack we are going to have. We chose to have one called 'Bump In The Night' as we thought it fitted together with our thriller really well. The sounds also went with what was taking place in each shot we had. Below is the chosen soundtrack for our thriller.

Film Poster
This is our film poster. The image used is a screenshot of me from the thriller movie. The gun in this poster represents the war and the danger involved however the butterfly on the end shows that although they will do anything to survive they are still human and will only do what is necessary . 'Just when you think you're alone' refers to our plot in which one of the characters believes they are the only one alive after the nuclear attack however this is proven to be untrue.
Poster Making
To create the poster I took a screenshot from a video clip for our thriller. I then used an app called 'Phonto' to edit the words on. I then used my phone to crop the photo. I chose the colour red for it to stand out with the black background. I used a font called 'Capture It' because it looks like an army font which fits the plot of our thriller.
Props and Costumes
For our final piece we decided for the actors costumes to be plain black clothing with a camouflage jacket. This represents the war and the need for them to survive no matter what. The plain black clothing was used to keep the characters simple yet effective to keep the audience guessing but also interested. For the two gas mask characters which I and Beckie played we simply added a gas mask which symbolized the nuclear war and distinguished them from the single character Beckie also played. We picked our costumes by using the fancy dress area located in the bunker which contained jackets, gas masks, ect and we got the plain clothing from home. Other props that we used were a wooden coffin and beds. These were already located in the bunker for our use.
